Leader of the Council: David Pugh
He worked at Conservative Central Office as Head of Youth from 2000 – 2004 before returning to the Island full-time. He plays a cornet in Shanklin’s Town Band and is a member of the Town Council. First elected to the Isle of Wight Council in 2005, he was Cabinet Secretary until April 2007 when he graduated to Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure and Communications. He was elected Leader of the Conservative Group in September 2007 and, after re-election to the Council in June 2009, combines that Leadership with Cabinet Member responsibility for Governance and School Improvement. After teaching economics in comprehensive schools, he worked on Education Policy at the Conservative Research Department and went on to become Special Advisor to Ministers at the Department of Health and Social Security. From 1988-1997 he ran the Grant Maintained Schools Foundation and went on to be an Education Consultant with the Girls’ Day School Trust, American education company Edison and the London Borough of Southwark. After 17 years as a city councillor, he narrowly lost in the Island’s General Election campaign of 2001 before going on to win those of June 2001 and 2005. Born in Wales, his career began in Cardiff as a teacher, then to Essex as a Head Teacher before joining the inspection/advisory service at the Essex Council. His next move was to Luton before becoming Corporate Director – Children, Education and Families in 2001. He then came to the Island as Director of Children’s and Young People’s Services in 2006. At the age of 55, he secured the vacant Chief Executive post from 28 July 2008. |
Born on the Island, he grew up in Newport, Lake and Shanklin before studying politics at the Universities of Wales and Southampton.
Born in 1953 in Coventry, he was educated at Rugby, Keble College, Oxford, Birmingham University and Henley Management College.
Appointed to the Council’s highest officer post in July 2008 following the departure to Newham of his predecessor Joe Duckworth.
