Figures released by the government today show that there are now 3,572 more homes on the Island than in 2005; the growth rate of 5.66% is the fifth fastest among the 67 local authorities in the South East region. There are now 66,714 homes on the Island compared with 63,142 in 2005. The region's fastest rate of growth has been recorded by Milton Keynes at 8.32%, followed by Tonbridge (7.17%), West Oxfordshite (7.13%) and Basingstoke (6.65%). The average growth rate for the whole South East region has been 3.88%. However, 2009 saw only 67 homes added to the Island total, exactly matching the South East region average growth rate of 0.91%.
