Brading Population
Brading is home for a total of 2,082 people according to the government’s latest estimates. Of the total, 308 (15%) are children under the age of 16 and 634 (30%) are over state pension age. These percentages compare with 17% and 27% for the Island as a whole and 19% and 19% for the whole of the country. The remainder of Brading’s population on the basis of age consists of 259 (12%) aged 16-29; 311 (15%) aged 30-44; and 570 (27%) between 31 and state pension age. The 882 households of Brading own 1,040 vehicles between them with 25% not having one at all. Some 10% of the population work mainly at or from home. Housing
The High Street terrace shown here is not typical of Brading’s housing stock – only 131 of its 936 homes are in terraces. Detached accommodation, houses or bungalows, is the most frequently found in the Town, providing homes for 42% of its households according to the last Census – nearly twice the national average of 22%. Semi-detached homes provide for 33% of Brading residents, about the same as the national average while flats, at 10% of Brading’s provisions are exactly twice their proportion of the national stock. Over 700 of Brading’s households are owner-occupiers, about 80% of the total. Social Housing, owned by South Wight Housing, provides 137 homes with private rented being the basis for just 48 homes. Its parent body, Southern Housing Group, owns 24,000 properties in London and the South East, responsible for homes for 66,000 residents, employing 900 staff and working with 80 local authorities. It was inspected by the Audit Commission in January 2009. The Inspectors found that it in respect of Diversity, Value for Money, Use of repairs reporting and Income collection its strengths and weakness were about equal while strengths outweighed weaknesses in Access and customer care and Resident Involvement. South Wight Housing is responsible for 137 homes in Brading, part of the 3,000 they have on the Island. Formed in 1990 by the transfer of the Council’s housing stock it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Southern Housing Group in July 2002 and, in October 2005, merged with the Isle of Wight Housing Association to become the largest Housing Association on the Island.
